Visiting Mexico is a gift to the senses. Every colour, sound and flavour is present anywhere you go. What better example than food? There is nowhere better to enjoy Mexican food than straight from the source. If you are lucky to visit Mexico sometime in the future, let us give you our top foods to try while you are there.

Antojitos

Antojitos mean little cravings. Those little (or big) things you crave, possibly a little bit too nice to be healthy but absolutely delicious. You will often see Antojitos written on boards or menus and this will include a rich assortment of dishes. To name just a few, this can include but is not limited to quesadillas, tostadas, pambazos or gorditas.  Even when all of these can be a proper meal, they are usually listed as small extras to be enjoyed aside from the main dish. All of them will be served deliciously dressed with the usual toppings such as cream, cheese, salsas and fresh toppings. Ordering a few Antojitos is a fantastic way to get a sample of a few different delicious and unique Mexican dishes.

Chilaquiles

A beloved Mexican dish that is a common breakfast and lunch item. Crispy fried corn tortillas covered in different sauces and topped with eggs, chicken and even birria. Even when the traditional chilaquiles are green or red, depending on the salsa, the truth is that there are no rules. The different combinations only result and more unique and delicious chilaquiles and they are a must-try whenever possible.

We have a fantastic Spicy Green Chilaquiles recipe that you can make right at home. Find the recipe here.

Guacamole

There is nothing like guacamole in Mexico. Being able to enjoy avocados that have never been frozen is a game changer. From simple mashed guacamole to a more elaborate one topped with grasshoppers or chicharrones, having guacamole with corn tortilla chips will make you very, very happy.

Tamales

These ancient parcels are such a treat. You will be bound to come across them all over the country. They can be wrapped in corn husk or banana leaves and the fillings change according to location too but they will always be delicious. Tamales are often sold together with champurrado or atole which is a chocolate-based drink made with masa or corn flour.  If you see them on a menu, make sure to try them and enjoy one of our favourite traditional foods.

Mariscos

Mariscos is a variety of fresh seafood prepared in different ways. These will be better enjoyed along coastal towns but available all over the country. Mariscos often refers to shellfish, octopus, shrimp, clams, sea urchins and more. In Mexico, these will be served fresh in cocktail form with lime juice, and tomato and seasoned with plenty of sauces. They can be also served in tostadas as ceviche. The combinations are endless and all of them are delicious.
