Elotes / Esquites / Mexican Street Corn

Boiled or grilled corn straight from the cob or served in a cup, this street snack is as delicious as it comes. Elotes are served with mayonnaise, crema and an assortment of chilli powder and spicy sauces with plenty of lime juice. A favourite among Mexicans! You will find them everywhere you go, often sold in little street cars where they will keep them hot and made to order. We have a simple recipe perfect for those times when you need a homemade Mexican snack. Find it here.

Fruit

Fresh fruit can be such a treat in Mexico. You will find the traditional and the exotic fruits to be incredibly sweet and juicy. You will be likely to find street stands selling cups with mixed fruit in them. They will be sold naturally or prepared with, you guessed, lime juice and chilli powder. Watermelon, mangoes, pineapple, coconut and cucumber are some of the most common ones. Do not miss the opportunity to indulge in fruit while visiting Mexico.

Pan Dulce

Pan dulce or Mexican sweet bread is so unique and an absolute treat! The variety of bread and pastries available in Mexico is huge. Mexican baked goods have a huge French influence that peaked in the early 20th Century. There are hundreds of sweet bread variations and all of them are worth trying. From everyday conchas to seasonal treats such as pan de muerto or roscas de reyes, we highly recommend diving into these inexpensive but beautiful treats whenever you’re in Mexico.

Paletas

Paletas are a Mexican frozen treat, often made with fresh fruits. They can be water-based or cream-based. You will find them all over the country sold in little street cars and all the way to supermarkets. A perfect treat to snack on between meals and to cool down after a hot, long walk. These are a must-try for sure!

Churros

Mexican churros are one of the most popular desserts and street snacks and you can find them all over the country. To track the origins of the churro, we need to travel back to China where a fried dough strip was served for breakfast. Portuguese merchants brought the idea back to the Iberic Peninsula where they added the star-shaped pattern and covered it in sugar. In time, Spanish conquistadores would bring the snack to America. Regardless of its origin, churros are now a delicious staple of Mexican food. Always present during festivals, street carts and restaurants. Mexican churros are absolutely delicious, freshly made to order covered in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar and packed in paper bags.
